The Sd.Kfz. 251/2 is not a frontline combat vehicle. His strength lies not in direct duels, but in covered firing positions, target observation, quick corrections and regular changes of position.
The Sd.Kfz. 251/2 Ausf. C supports attacks and defenses through indirect mortar fire. Unlike the 10.5 cm howitzer, it is closer to the battle and can deploy more quickly. This makes it particularly suitable for urban combat, attack preparation, barrage and smoke support.
The vehicle is most effective in conjunction with infantry and a forward observer. Without target observation, the mortar quickly becomes inaccurate and wastes ammunition.
The driver brings the vehicle into position, keeps a path of retreat clear and decides when to change position.
The gunner operates the mortar, makes target corrections and keeps the fire order controlled.
Choose a position with cover, a retreat route and as little visibility as possible.
The target area should be observed by a forward observer or clearly identified by mission markers.
Aim the mortar at the reported range and windage.
The first shot is for zeroing in, not for effect.
The Forward Observer reports short, long, left or right.
Correct distance or aspect clearly and not too carefully.
If the impact is in the target area, short, controlled bursts of fire follow.
Laid after several volleys before the enemy clears up the firing position.
| Report | Meaning | correction |
|---|---|---|
| Short | Impact too short | Increase distance |
| Long | Impact too far | Reduce distance |
| Left | Impact to the left of the target | correct to the right |
| Right | Impact to the right of the target | correct to the left |
Corrections that are too small cost time and ammunition. If there is a significant deviation, it is better to correct it with 50 m, 100 m or 150 m and then halve it.
Short → +100 m → Long → -50 m → target area
Standard ammunition against infantry, FMS, houses, gun emplacements and light vehicles.
Smoke ammunition is not used to destroy, but rather to move and camouflage your own forces.
The Sd.Kfz. 251/2 should not operate alone. Its effect comes from coordination with the infantry. The mortar forces defenders to take cover while friendly troops advance or change positions.
The Sd.Kfz. 251/2 Ausf. C is a mobile indirect fire support vehicle. He is particularly strong when he stands guard, is led by a forward observer and quickly changes positions after short fire missions.
Its task is not direct combat, but rather holding down, blinding and destroying enemy infantry accumulations. Used correctly, it can prepare attacks, disrupt defenses and put entire target areas under pressure.
